Basement Waterproofing in Cambridge
Interior waterproofing, sump systems and crack repair for Cambridge basements — the step that comes before any finishing, especially near the Grand and Speed rivers.
Cambridge has more reason than most cities to take basement water seriously. The Grand River runs through Galt, the Speed through Preston and Hespeler, and the Grand River Conservation Authority regulates large areas of the city as floodplain. Even well outside the floodplain, the water table is high in spring and after heavy rain, and the older block and stone foundations in Preston and Galt let it in through the mortar joints and the cove where the wall meets the floor.
We waterproof as part of a renovation — so you're not finishing a basement that will be torn out in three years — and as a standalone job for homeowners who just want a dry basement.
What's included
- Finding the water: grading, downspouts, window wells, cracks, the cove joint, or hydrostatic pressure under the slab
- Interior perimeter drainage — a weeping tile system inside the footing, under the slab, draining to a sump
- Sump pump with a battery backup, because the power goes out when the storm does
- Foundation crack injection (poured concrete) or parging and drainage membrane (block and stone)
- Rigid insulation and a proper vapour barrier so the wall can dry toward the inside

Block, stone and poured — three different fixes
A poured-concrete wall (most Cambridge homes built after the late 1970s) leaks through cracks, which we inject. A block wall (Preston, East Galt, 1950s–70s) fills with water inside the cores and weeps at the bottom course; that needs drainage at the base and weep holes, not injection. A rubble-stone wall in a Galt century home needs a drainage membrane and a managed interior system — you cannot make stone waterproof, but you can control where the water goes.
Exterior versus interior
Exterior excavation and membrane is the textbook answer, and we'll recommend it when the wall is accessible and the problem is a single side. On most Cambridge lots — tight side yards, decks, driveways, mature trees — an interior system is more practical and just as effective at keeping the finished space dry.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to waterproof before finishing my basement?
If there's any history of water or visible efflorescence, staining or a musty smell, yes. If the basement has been bone-dry for years and the grading and downspouts are right, we'll say so and skip it.
Does insurance cover basement water in Cambridge?
Overland flood and sewer backup are separate add-ons on most Ontario policies, and near the Grand and Speed some insurers limit them. A backwater valve and sump with backup can lower both the risk and the premium.
How long does interior waterproofing take?
A full perimeter interior system in a typical Cambridge bungalow is about three to five days, before any finishing starts.
