What's different about finishing a basement in Cambridge
Three kinds of foundation, three kinds of fix. Poured concrete in the 1990s-and-newer subdivisions (Hespeler north, Clemens Mill, Fiddlesticks) leaks through cracks we inject. Block in Preston and East Galt weeps at the bottom course and needs drainage, not injection. Rubble stone in Galt can't be made waterproof — it can only be managed. We build the wall assembly to suit.
Headroom decides the plan. Many Preston bungalows sit around 6'10"; many Galt century homes are under that. Living space has a minimum height and a legal apartment a stricter one. We measure at the site visit and tell you honestly whether it's a full finish, a partial one, or a floor-lowering job.
Basement apartments are as-of-right — and inspected. Ontario allows additional residential units on most Cambridge lots. Egress windows, fire separation, interconnected alarms, a second kitchen and often a panel upgrade are what the City's permit will require. We build to that and hand you the final.
Sewer backup is the bigger flood. In the older parts of Galt and Preston we rebuild with a backwater valve and a battery-backup sump, and we'll tell you if the City's flood-protection subsidy is open.
