Is Your Basement Ready to Finish? 5 Things to Check
Five things to check in a Cambridge basement before you plan the finish — the ones that decide whether the project is straightforward or needs a different plan.
Before the rec room, the bar or the apartment, walk your basement with a flashlight and check these five things. They're the difference between a clean quote and a surprise.
1. Any sign of water, ever
White powdery efflorescence on the block, a tide line on the wall, a rusty stain at the base of the furnace, a musty smell in June. Cambridge basements near the Grand and Speed, and older block foundations in Preston and East Galt, are the usual suspects. Water gets solved first — see waterproofing.
2. Headroom
Measure from the slab to the underside of the joists, and separately under the beam and ducts. Living space has a minimum, apartments a stricter one. Many Preston bungalows are right at the line; many Galt century homes are under it.
3. Egress
A bedroom needs an egress window and a well you can climb out of. Look at your foundation walls: poured or block walls can be cut; where the window would land — under a deck, a driveway, a porch — decides whether it's practical.
4. The panel
A finished basement adds lighting, outlets, maybe a bathroom and a kitchen. A 100-amp panel in a 1960s Preston home may need an upgrade, or at least a load calculation, and older panels of certain brands should be replaced regardless.
5. What you actually want

Can I finish a basement with a low ceiling?
Living space has minimum height rules, with some allowance for existing basements. We'll measure at the site visit and tell you exactly where you stand — and what lowering the floor would cost if you want to go that route.
Is efflorescence a problem?
The white powder itself is harmless, but it means water has been moving through the wall. That needs to be understood before anything is built in front of it.
